Throughout the year RFTU organises and co-organises up to 100 professional events, festivals, conferences, exhibitions of theatre set and costume design, seminars, workshops and master classes given by leading professionals with different partners in Russia and abroad.

Drama Theatre

Lev Dodin Workshop for Theatre Directors

6-11 December, 2019

Drama Theatre Department together with the Russian Theatre Directors Guild announce open call for theatre director workshop under the leadership of Lev Dodin, which will take place 6-11 December in St.Petersburg. Number of participants is limited to 15. Participants are offered an opportunity to attend rehearsals of the Master, during which he shares his best practices, discoveries, and author’s approach. The workshop program also includes visits to best performances of St. Petersburg theaters. Working language is Russian. Professional education in theatre directing is a must. Participation is free of charge. Russian Theatre Union also provides accommodation in St. Petersburg for duration of the workshop. Deadline for applications is October 21, 2019.


Dmitry Bertman's workshop for vocal artists

21 - 23 November 2019

Dmitry Bertman is one of the Russian leading opera directors. His workshop will address the following topics: - Training on voice, diction, breath - Practical exercises on vocal texts. - Coordination of vocal skills - Work on character building and the relationship between music and text - Musical phrase in the context of the piece.

Puppet Theatre


29 November - 8 December, 2019

November 29 - December 8, 2019 the RFTU Department for children and puppet theatres organisers laboratory on shadow puppets. Laboratory will be led by designer Viktor Platonov in the famous Moscow Ten’ (Shadow) Theatre. The laboratory will comprise theoretical classes, meetings with puppet theatre designers, artists, sculptors, museum and theater collections, visits to performances of Moscow puppet theatres. Russian Theatre Union covers accommodation in Moscow for lab participants. Application deadline: November 1, 2019.

Theatre For Children And Youth

Artmigration. Kids

28 October - 3 November, 2019

The Festival introduces the best performances for children and youth directed by the young theatre directors who have recently graduated from Moscow theatre schools and work in regional Russian theatres. This year the Festival will present seven productions from Nyagan Theatre for Young Audience, Chelyabinsk Youth Theatre, Nutcracker Ballet Theatre from Yekaterinburg, Kirov Puppet Theatre, ArtReprisa Theatre-Cabaret from Vologda, Novosibirsk First Theatre. Special programme of ArtMigration. Kids -2019 features …And His Name Was Domino directed by extraordinary Yana Tumina in Ulger Puppet Theatre, Republic of Buryatia.


19-23 November, 2019

RFTU Department of theater for children and puppet theater organizes Laboratory for young artists working in theaters for children and youth under the leadership of Professor Alexander Kuzin. Theme of the laboratory is how to work with poetic drama. Actors working in theaters for children and youth in the regions of Russia and aged under 30 are welcome to apply. Participation in the project is free; RFTU covers hotel accommodation.

ART-BAGGAGE Travel Grants program

Before Dec. 15, 2019

The program is designed to stimulate international cooperation and artistic mobility. Grants cover travel expenses for individual theatre professionals taking part in professional theatre events abroad: conferences, trainings, festivals and residencies.

Artistic Workshops

All year round Russian Theatre Union organises workshops for theatre practitioners of all disciplines (directors, actors, designers, etc.) across Russia to foster professional development, networking and exchange. All the workshops are led by outstanding Russian artists and leading theatre trainers.

Digital catalogue - the plays are arranged by the playwrights, enterpreters, genres, language. List of the new publications is also available.

Digital Theatre Words

Digital Theatre Words (DTW) is a global project undertaken by International Organization of Scenographers, Theatre Architects and Technicians (OISTAT), the goal of the project is to compile an Internet dictionary addressed to all theatre professionals: set designers, stage architects, managers, costume designers, light designers, sound specialists, technicians, etc. The Russian-English version worked out by the Russian OISTAT Centre is available online at www.rtlb.ru/en/dtw/

RTU Publishing

Russian Theatre Union is a founder and publisher of several theatre magazines: THEATRE, THE OTHER SHORES, STRASTNOY BULEVARD, 10, THE STAGE. Selected publications or electronic copies of the magazines are available on their websites.

School for Theatre Technicians v.7.0

1 - 10 December, 2019

School for theatre technicians, technical directors, light and sound designers. The programme is compiled of practical workshops on light, sound, multimedia technologies given by advanced Russian and international practitioners. The school is organised in partnership with companies specialised in modern theatre technologies and leading Moscow theatres.

Seminars for young theatre critics and journalists

Seminars are to encrease the professional skills of young critics, stimulate discussions about the problems and trends of theatres in Russia and understanding of the current theatrical process in the country.

THEATRE 2.1. Vakhtangov festival for theatre managers

5 - 9 December, 2019

Brand new initiative - Vakhtangov festival for theatre managers: Theater 2.1. – will be held in Moscow on December 5 - 9 as part of the RFTU Theatre Forum for Central Region of Russia. The festival will be held at various venues in Moscow: Vakhtangov Theatre, Skolkovo Innovation Centre, GUM and the Bolshoi Theatre. Within the framework of the festival, in addition to the main training sessions, the Vakhtangov Prize in the field of theatre organization for young professionals will be awarded for the first time. The festival is organised by Kirill Krok, managing director of the Vakhtangov Theatre and a young team of producers. READ MORE >

Teatr (The Theatre) Magazine

THE THEATRE (TEATR), the oldest of the existing Russian theatre magazines, is currently edited by Marina Davydova. There are three main sections of the magazine: On Stage (to represent all genres of theatre history including the genre of detailed review); Off Stage (to cover all kinds of the sociological aspects of drama that meet broad public response) and Beyond the Stage (to highlight the events from the standpoint of theatrical culturology). Above all the magazine has the section called Yellow Pages that carries all sorts of curious statistics, infograms and the results of various polls.

The Boyar House

A Russian Theatre Union (RTU) venue with 18th century arched ceilings offers excellent atmosphere for all sorts of theatre events. It gives space to young experimental artists and independent theatre companies, hosts RTU projects, festivals, theatre designers exhibitions, installations, lectures and workshops.

The Young Set Designers Exhibition KLIN 14

November 2019

An annual exhibition of young set designers - students and graduates from Moscow theatre schools who specialize in set design. KLIN is an exhibition of (and for) young art that breaks into the format of “grown-up theatre”.

Theatre Marathon. Eight Theatre Forums in the Russian Regions


In the course of 2019 Russian Theatre Union will organise eight Theatre Forums, one in every region of the Russian Federation, with a common title "Russian Theatre in the XXI Century. New Perspective". Every Forum will gather over 200 theatre practitioners with the aim to work out common grounds, foster artistic creation, inspire and support young theatre artists, offer training opportunities, facilitate artistic collaboration and networking.

Theatre Union Grants to support artistic projects for children and youth - 2019

As part of the State Program to support Theatre for Children and Youth Russian Theatre Union annually awards grants for artistic projects aiming to facilitate development of the TYA (i.e.festivals, workshops, publishing of the specialised books and others).
